Thomas Hynes
Thomas studied at the University of Saskatchewan, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 2012 and a Juris Doctor in 2015. Called to the bar in 2016, he practiced in Regina for several years before returning home to Saskatoon when he joined Pfefferle Law in 2022. He now works exclusively in the area of criminal defence, with a particular emphasis on criminal appeals.
Thomas regularly appears in the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan, where he handles every manner of criminal appeals from conviction, sentence, and responses to Crown appeals. He has appeared a number of times at the Supreme Court of Canada, both on behalf of the main parties to appeals and interveners looking to shape the scope of the criminal law. In addition to his appellate practice, Thomas maintains a criminal trial practice. He has appeared across the province in Provincial Court and the Court of King’s Bench in both judge alone and jury trials, as well as bail hearings, preliminary inquiries, sentencing hearings, and dangerous offender proceedings. He has handled a wide variety of cases from assault, uttering threats, theft, fraud, mischief, and serious driving offences, to drug trafficking, murder, manslaughter, sexual assault, robbery, and firearms charges. Thomas has significant experience challenging the constitutionality of laws, protecting civil liberties, and fighting against government overreach.
Thomas is also passionate about legal education and advocacy training. He has presented at a variety of conferences in the area of criminal law, he is on the faculty of the Law Society of Saskatchewan’s Trial Advocacy Workshop, and is a guest contributor to the continuing professional development publication, “Criminal Defence Essentials”. He chairs the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyers Association criminal law section group list-serve, and he co-coaches the University of Saskatchewan’s Gale Moot team together with his colleague Zachary Carter.
